Chapter 29

Alleghany National Forest, Pennsylvania

One day after America went dark

Ethan pressed his palm against the rough surface of the tree, panic gripping his chest, his heart bursting with anxiety and fear. Darkness descended around him, the vast and intimidating forest now a series of fearsome shadows, lurking, lanky skeleton creatures with tree branch arms and narrow fingers. Wind rustled through the leaves, the faint call of nocturnal animals at seemingly every turn.

“Calm down, Ethan, calm down,” he hissed to himself, his voice coming out in a strangled growl of forced words. He’d been wandering through the trees for hours, eyes scanning for recognizable landmarks, looking toward the sky for some sign of a north star, some way to find his way from the maze of unending wilderness.

So far, he’d come up painfully empty. For the first few hours, he’d turned right and kept walking straight, thinking he was heading north, but after passing through the same relentless forest hour after hour, he had begun questioning his instinct and had started altering his path, but he feared that all he’d ended up doing was driving himself deeper and deeper into the forest.

Now, night was settling in around him, a shifting canvas of black, purple and indigo, the clouds gathering around the sparse stars and thick, fat moon, shining just enough light to remind him how completely lost he was.

His throat was parched, his lips cracked and dry and a low growl churned from within the broad expanse of his large belly. He was hungry, thirsty, tired and lost, without a single item on his person to help him find his way. Chase hadn’t given him any food or water, no backpack, no sleeping bag, merely the clothes on his back and his wits, and when it came to the forest, neither of those things were of much use to Ethan Richards.

His father had made him join the Boy Scouts when he was a kid, as much as he didn’t want to, and he was sorry to see that now, fifty years later, he’d absorbed next to nothing from that experience. His father would have been crushingly disappointed in him right now, even more disappointed than usual at his fat son who had turned soft and mushy in his middle age. More fascinated in technology and audio/video gear than in hiking, fishing or hunting, his outdoorsman father constantly badgered him about being more of a man.

Ethan had always rolled his eyes, but as he leaned up against the narrow trunk of a tree, he looked at the trees around him and couldn’t help but wonder if his father had been right. If Chase hadn’t been lying— if there really had been some sort of EMP that had knocked out the power grid and disabled the majority of technology throughout America— anything he’d taught himself over his sixty years of life was all for nothing, and those lessons from his father he’d cast aside would be coming back to bite him on the ass.
